At the close of World War II, Mengele faced serious consequences so he left Auschwitz on January 17, 1945 and fled to South America. When he left, he took with him all of the documentation from his experiments. He avoided authorities by moving from country to country. He was not safe staying in the same location because of the many warrants, rewards, and bounties that were offered for his capture. Mengele managed to live for the next 35 years without being seized.
While on the run, Mengele was still accompanied by family members. Initially, he divorced his wife, Irene Mengele. Then, he married a woman named Martha. Martha happened to have been married to his brother Karl. However, once Karl died, his widow soon married Josef Mengele. Martha and her son lived with Mengele throughout South America.
After 35 years of not being captured, Mengele finally died. His death occurred in 1979 when Mengele was sixty-seven, but it was kept a secret for the next sis years. While swimming one day, he suffered a massive stroke and he began to drown in that very ocean. By the time when he was eventually dragged back to shore, the Angel of Death was dead. This death is ironic because he almost drowned to death many years before that when he was a child.
